11. There Will Be Blood (2007)

January 4, 2014

It took me 7 years to finally see There Will Be Blood. No offense, but I'm not a big Paul Thomas Anderson fan in the first place. There Will Be Blood had some breathtaking moments and excellent performances, but it was way too long. When an oil prospector is told about large amounts of oil in a small town, and he is given an opportunity to drill there in exchange for donating some of his profits to the local church, he jumps at the chance and immediately begins drilling. Things go wrong, however, when an explosion leaves the prospector's son deaf. The pastor of the new church blames the prospector for not giving enough to the church and essentially tells him he is cursed. The son gets sent away and the prospector ends up getting filthy rich while going completely mad. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the prospector, whose semi-adopted, young son acts as his business partner. Paul Dano very convincingly plays the crazy pastor. There are plenty of things I would suggest to watch first, but it is decent enough to watch if you have 3 hours to spare.
