67. Nebraska (2013)

February 2, 2014

If Dallas Buyers Club does not win best picture this year, I hope Nebraska does. Nebraska offers an eery peek into small towns and even smaller minds in America on one man's journey from Billings, Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska. Bruce Dern gets a piece of spam in the mail alerting him that he is the winner of one million dollars. Dern's wife and kids beg him to just forget about it, but he stands determined to walk hundreds of miles to claim his prize. One of his sons, Will Forte, takes off from work and decides to drive his dad to Lincoln, even though he knows there is nothing in store for him there. Along the way, they encounter former friends and family that they haven't seen in years. When they hear that Dern is a newly minted millionaire, people start coming out of the woodwork, asking for handouts and favors and reimbursements for fake former debts owed. Nebraska is about a lot of things, in my opinion. It is about the true nature of people, particularly when money is introduced into the equation, and it is about the importance of finding meaning or value in your own life. Most important, however, this movie was about the real meaning of the word family. Family means the people who really care about you, despite how much money you have, or anything else. As Dern got closer and closer to Lincoln, his bond with his son got stronger and stronger, and the relationship they never really had was finally able to bloom. The cast was perfect, also featuring Stacy Keach as Dern's former friend and business partner and current sleazeball, and Bob Odenkirk as Forte's brother. I highly recommend watching this movie with someone you love, especially on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
