409. Autómata (2014)

November 10, 2014

Similar to 'Oblivion', 'Autómata' was a mash up of several sci-fi movies and styles including 'Blade Runner', 'I, Robot', 'Elysium', and many more. I can't fault either movie for that though, because they were both really good. In fact, I can't fault 'Autómata' for anything. It was fantastic. It did delve into some cheesy dialogue near the end, but that didn't hurt the overall feel of the movie. Antonio Banderas starred as an agent for a robotics company who had to make sure the robots they built never hurt humans. After Dylan McDermott found a robot who seemed to be alive in the human sense and shot it in the head and then brought it back to the company for testing, Banderas began investigating a potential outbreak of robots who had somehow altered their programming to become more aware. What he found was totally unexpected though, as the robots had not only become aware, they had begun colonizing an area that the humans had made unsafe for living creatures through nuclear activity. He also found that the robots were extremely peaceful and it was, of course, the humans that needed to be feared. Featuring a stellar supporting cast including Robert Forster and Melanie Griffith, 'Autómata' is one that I would highly recommend seeing.
