406. Good Will Hunting (1997)

November 9, 2014

I bought the DVD of 'Good Will Hunting' many years ago for the sole purpose of watching Elliott Smith's Miss Misery music video. I watched the movie once, and aside from Smith's songs being featured in the movie, I didn't really care one way or the other about it. With a more recent appreciation for the actors involved, I decided to give the movie another chance, and I will say that it was much better this time around. I still found it a bit conceited though since Matt Damon co-wrote the script and made himself a tortured genius that everyone loved despite him being a complete jerk to them. Damon played Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT with the ability to quickly solve mathematical equations that took prized mathematicians years to figure out. He also was brilliant in just about every other subject because he could read books and memorize everything. When he wasn't solving impossible problems, he was getting into fights and otherwise breaking all the rules. A professor at MIT decided to take a chance on him and as a condition of his parole after breaking a guy's nose for no apparent reason, Will had to see a therapist to deal with his emotional issues. After going through several professional psychiatrists and therapists and hypnotists to no effect, the professor referred him to his old roommate, Robin Williams. Williams came from a similar background and eventually broke through to Will even though Will was incredibly rude and mean. It is worth watching for Robin Williams, as per usual, and to a lesser extent for the rest of the cast who all did a decent job.
