456. Saved! (2004)

December 6, 2014

'Saved!' is a surprisingly good movie about a girl (Jena Malone) at a Christan school who has sex with her gay boyfriend in an attempt to 'save' him, but ends up getting pregnant with his baby and still not changing his sexual orientation. He gets sent to a special school where they deal with special cases that they don't understand or approve of and she tries to hide her pregnancy from the world. When one of her friends (Mandy Moore) hears about the gay boyfriend, she starts a prayer group to try to save his soul, which irritates Malone and the two sort of become enemies. Eventually everyone finds out that Malone is pregnant and after Moore frames Malone and her new friends (Eva Amurri and a wheelchair-bound Macaulay Culkin) for vandalism, she is banned from attending prom. The school principal, Pastor Skip (Martin Donovan), thinks the bible is very clear about premarital sex and homosexual relationships, and thinks the school needs to be strict against those things. The problem is, his son (Patrick Fugit) is in love with Malone, and Skip is in love with Malone's mom (Mary-Louise Parker), which clouds his judgment. Anyway, everything works out, and for the most part everyone learns that being a good person and accepting people for who they are is more important than anything else. I definitely recommend it.
