454. Rudy (1993)

December 5, 2014

Probably the most heartwarming movie about football ever made, 'Rudy' is based on the true story of Rudy Ruettiger, a scrawny kid with big dreams of playing football for Notre Dame someday. Sean Astin plays Rudy, a nice kid with dyslexia who doesn't make very good grades and isn't big enough for an athletic scholarship. After high school he works in a steel mill with his dad and pretty much all the other guys in town until he can save up enough money to go to Notre Dame. When his best friend gets killed in an accident at work, he takes it as a sign that he should go to school. With the help of a preacher, he gets in to Holy Cross Lutheran which is just down the street from Notre Dame, with the expectation that good grades and hard work will still get him where he needs to be. He gets help from a tutor (Jon Favreau) in exchange for trying to find him a girlfriend. After making decent grades and getting several rejection letters, Rudy finally gets accepted to Notre Dame and tries out for the football team. The coaches and players think he is too small to play but one of the coaches notices he has more heart than anyone else on the team so they let him practice. On the last game of the season they let him dress and put him in for a couple plays and everyone goes nuts. It is a very inspirational movie that you can enjoy even if you don't like football.
